David Broad and the Meanwood Valley Stompers are transatlantic country blues and rural swing trio available for swing dances, Lindy Hop camps, weddings, parties, shindigs, vintage events, Charleston competitions, funerals and other significant occasions.
Swing Dances
Dancers seem to love it when we play for them – they find the music easy to dance to and it makes a change from the usual swing bands you see at Lindy Hop events. The band are dancers themselves, so are aware of appropriate tempos and can reign it in when appropriate. We can also accommodate other American vernacular dances such as Balboa, Shag and Blues.
We’ve played countless dances across the North including Lindy Fridays (Leeds), Swing North (Manchester), Calderdale Swing, Mersey Swing Smackdown, Leeds Swing Exchange, Manchester Swing Exchange, Swing Revolution, Swingeroo, Friskin’ the Whiskers. Speak to any dance organiser in the north if you want to hear how we go down at swing dance events.
Festivals
The band is perfect for festivals, outdoors or indoors, and we get a great response from audiences whether it’s a blues, jazz, folk, swing dance or general vintage festival. We’re very adaptable, portable and can play a raucous midnight set in a packed bar (thank you Nighthawks!) or a relaxed afternoon set for dancers, or picnickers.
Some recent highlights have been The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival at the Little Theatre in Colne, Friskin’ the Whiskers, The Big Weekend in Shropshire and aforementioned, unforgettable Nighthawks.
We now come with a bespoke, hand made, carnival-esque stage setup (thanks Jonny!) to add to the evocation of a times gone by.
